How did Germantown MD get its name? ›

Germantown got its name from German settlers who moved there from Pennsylvania. Seneca was named after the Indian tribe. Bethesda derives its name from the Presbyterian Bethesda Meeting House built there.

The History of Germantown

Local Fact: Germantown was originally nicknamed “German Town” because of the heavy accents of the German residents. Even though a majority of residents were Scottish or English the name stuck, and “Germantown” was born.

The town was named Germantown by the group's leader Franz Pastorius, a German preacher from Sommerhausen. The town's population remained largely Dutch-speaking until 1709, after which a number of the Dutch families set out west and a series of major German emigrations reached Germantown and Pennsylvania as a whole.

In the early 19th century, about four in ten people in Montgomery County were enslaved. By 1860, this had decreased to three in ten, largely due to planters having switched from tobacco to grain production, the former having worn out the soil and the latter requiring less year-round labor.

How did Gaithersburg MD get its name? ›
